Latest Update

A peaceful candlelight condolence march was organized by the students in the evening at 7 PM. The students who had gathered in large numbers walked from the Gymkhana and placed candles around the Bidhan Chowk in front of the institute main building.

Meanwhile, the supposed address by the registrar to the students was only a rumour. The entire student community has been informed of the minutes of the meeting held between the student representatives and the administration through notices. The exact status on the resignations of the Director and Dean of Students’ Affairs is yet to be known. The arrival of the Board of Governors Chairman Dr. Muthuraman would be keenly awaited in this regard since the director’s resignation needs to be ratified by the Board of Governors before being forwarded to the HRD Ministry.

All classes will resume starting from tomorrow. The second meeting of the student representatives and the administration is scheduled to take place on Friday to look into the progress on the implementation of proposed reforms. The status of Gymkhana elections is obviously of the least concern at this point and hence no decision has been taken in this regard.

Also, regarding the construction of the multi-speciality hospital, the foundation stone for which was laid by ex-president Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, it is to be noted that it was the Government and not the institute administration that cancelled the funding; and hence it would be wrong to blame the administration for the same. The institute can be expected to push for this proposal now, in the wake of the present happenings.

We at The Scholars’ Avenue appeal to all students to maintain calm and trust us to keep you updated with authentic information as it comes.

I must commend scholar's avenue for their extremely responsible journalism. I have been checking the website for updates regularly and I am really filled with pride that you guys have taken the responsibility to dispel myths and rumors and to try and pacify the agitated student community. In hindsight, though I still feel that if the protest had not taken place then the issue would have just been brushed aside, but it might have been a risky situation. I reiterate, I shall be ready to lend my voice and support in whatever ways possible.

Deep condolence to Rohit's family members. May his soul rest in peace.

My comments on this incident:

1. To the students: I appreciate the courage shown by you all and the steps taken.

Such a reaction was very much called for, and appropriate.

My advise: Go ahead and take charge of your well being. Not just BC Roy but initiate steps that need attention, Mess, hostels, etc.

Nobody else needs these more than you. It is therefore in your self interest to get these basic things.

Do not worry about academic action being taken against you for raising your voice (DC's, etc). Having gone through the process once, I can vouch that the administration is just too weak to take any action that would materially harm you.

Pick up the last 10 DC meeting results, and you would understand.

Only one word of caution, 'Do not take steps which you would have to regret later', as long as you can justify those steps to Yourself, go ahead and ACT.

2. To the administration: You must understand that it is high time we put things in order. There are a large number of things that need attention. Get up and act. Mobilize resources that you require.

Let not your inaction result in spoiling the lives of these young kids.

If you people cannot ACT now, summarily resign. Its time we all are made accountable for our actions/inaction.

Let us have independent watchdog bodies of students on campus for monitoring basic amenities and suggesting changes to the admin and student reps. Somethings like student welfare NGOs.

I am not sure if such a move is already in place. However, I would like to bring it up, i.e, Alumni can and should contribute to the well-being of the students from a health care perspective. We should contribute both in material (read money) and spirit towards building of a speciality hospital on campus. I am ready to contribute my part in this. We cannot wait for the administration to slumber on it. We must act and no time is more appropriate as NOW. Let us all contribute our share to building of a hospital.

I am not really positive on the "acting" body for such a suggestion. Can somebody from the institute take this up and see that the future of students' health care is secure.

Thanks.

FYI This student body is basically to quicken things in those areas which need to be attended right away, which are outright glaring at us. It shall begin with the most obvious and pressing needs i.e. with regard to the BC Roy Hospital. But, they shall not restrict themselves to this alone to wait for another unfortunate event to occur elsewhere due to some other cause and spark off another agitation. Instead, they shall work towards fixing other major things where ever required right now.

This body is not another permanent body which shall continue attending to students' grievances. The motive is to bring things to the right working condition so that no need arises for such student intervention any time in future and the administration fulfills its duty by itself. And as it is the VP, UG Rep, HPs, etc shall even now play their part and make sure action is taken and do the same in future also which is expected from them. This body is meant to bring a more focussed approach towards the most glaring things right now and to bring immediate action.

They shall begin by structuring what shall be presented to the Board of Governors Chairman Dr. Muthuraman so that he gets a clear picture of the present scenario here and also the needful measures which the students feel need to be taken.

I only hope that something good comes out of all this.
Improving the health care infrastructure is not only in the benefit of the students, but also would benefit the faculty and the staff. How could the Institute attract good faculty if they cannot ensure proper healthcare facilities. Kharagpur already has a disadvantage of being far away from any major city. An Institute that can develop artificial heart should have the facilities available to keep all its hearts beating.

Hall presidents and SSMs fail to deliver....its now that our cripple system stares in our face. Those Poltu-Pacts during elections, that neglect to vote all responsible for these self appointed ball-less fuckwit asswipes called HPs and SSMs !
They think they know the pulse of the junta. I mean a candle light protest is inherently a peaceful protest, that violence may come out of it is a lame excuse, violence can then come out everywhere !
and then when people did show up for the protest, these HPs and SSMs were there - " controlling " the junta ! Control ---- your ass !
They kept repeating, " Now they go violent.....and now it goes bad... "
Nothing happened, junta showed more maturity than was expected from them by their very own "elected" leaders !

Just one last request to those Rtards : Stop asslicking administration, do your job, dont play a double game here, and if u can't do it, then STFU !

I do not believe that the funding for a multi-speciality hospital, the foundation stone of which was laid by the former President of India, was not cancelled by the Govt. It was the same govt at the Center which supported the proposed plan. Only after the former director SK Dube left and D Achrya took charge, the whole plan was stopped. It is very likely there are "other factors", such as internal politics that caused the cancellation of the proposed state-of-the-art hospital.

As mentioned in the "minutes of the meeting", regarding the construction of the MULTI-SPECIALITY HOSPITAL, the foundation stone for which was laid by ex-president Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, that it was the Government and not the institute administration that cancelled the funding. But could'nt the administration have pushed forward with this matter, when it involves such a great cause. It deals with the health of thousands of students, faculties, staff members and their families. Was'nt this a matter to be dealt with much more sincerity and perceiverence?

I belong to School of Medical Science and Technology and i witness it everyday that how our faculty members are dedicatedly still working towards it .Our former H.O.D, Prof.A.K.Ray have tirelessly worked for it and tried to make it a success. All the kudos to his relenteless effort! Ask anyone in SMST..be it a student or a staff..you will know what it is..

The plan involves high quality medical care with very sophisticated medical instruments like the MRI,CT Scan to mention very few and even a OCT ( a high precession medical imaging equipment with higher resolution than the prevelent techniques).

We are a team of doctors and engineers out here and if given the opportunity and facilites can work for a greater cause.

Whatever we have lost cant be regained.. lets atleast assure that we dont loose more.A hospital of this kind will be of great value and is the need of the hour..

FIGHT junta FIGHT.. lets make this state-of-art hospital a reality.

Lets not allow the protest to die down so soon. It has cost a young life, we cannot allow more such incidents to take place. Just think about the father who once rejoiced and admitted his son in IIT and now he is here to take his body and do his final rites. He could have been my own brother, he could have been me. There's should be an answer to a corruption, a justice is required.

It is indeed a very pathetic and shameful act in the history of IIT to be a cause of such an outburst. IIT has lost one of its own gems because of its sheer negligence and irresponsibility to establish just the basic need of an individual – a proper medical care. What appears from the reports is just a mere act of negligence of the hospital as well as the administrative body meant to take care of it. How come the Oxygen supply of the cylinder was not turned on…? How come the attendant was not trained...? Is running a hospital a matter of joke.... u make a mistake and say sorry ….!! Life and death is only in the hands of God, but we being on this earth can at the least try to do as much possible to save a needful.
I think it’s a high time that the administration should wake up and do something concrete to establish a permanent solution during the hour of such a crisis. It’s my strong urge at this point to push forward the proposal regarding the construction of the MULTI-SPECIALTY HOSPITAL, the foundation stone for which was laid by ex-president Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, particularly when such a facility is not available anywhere nearby the Kharagpur town.
This multi-specialty hospital cum research centre aims at establishing high end medical diagnostic facilities along with advanced research facilities in the field of medical science and technology needed at the eleventh hour. It’s a pain striking effort by us, the students, faculties and staff of SMST (School of Medical Science and Technology) to make such a dream come true. Let us all get together and work for the betterment of the humanity.
At the wake of the present happenings, it’s my earnest request to all the IITians to support such an establishment. Let this be at least a firm stepping stone to support the cause of every needful in and around Kharagpur.

I don't understand why IITians want government funding for construction of a hospital when they earn millions through industries. I think it shows their attitude.. they don't want to shed a penny from their pocket... what pity .. where is the ever famous and rich alumni of IIT KGP ?
